INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY

Today is International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) which is a United Nations (UN) observed day on 3 December each year.

It aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.

IDPwD is an opportunity for us to make positive changes to the lives of the 4.4 million Australians with disability.

THE ANNUAL THEME

Each year the UN announce a theme to observe for International Day of People with Disability. The annual theme provides an overarching focus on how society can strive for inclusivity through the removal of physical, technological and attitudinal barriers for people with disability. This has been occurring since 1992 when the General Assembly announced 3 December as the International Day of Disabled Persons.

The theme for IDPwD 2021 is ‘Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world’.

DISABILITY INTERMEDIARIES AUSTRALIA (DIA)

Commenting on the IDPwD DIA CEO, Mr. Jess Harper, said:

“Stewardship within the Disability Support and Services Market is a critical element to ensure the 1 in 6 Australians with a disability can access what they need to live a good life.

Leadership by people with a disability has never been more crucial.
The entire team at DIA, from the Board to our Staff, are proud to be doing our bit in supporting and guiding the market that supports people with a disability.

Today we reflect on our achievements and missteps, and look to how we can do more in the coming year”.

GETTING INVOLVED

The IDPwD website has excellent resources for schools, community groups, organisations and workplaces to get involved by celebrating IDPwD.

DIA will continue to update the broader intermediaries sector with up to date information on the NDIS and is able to continue to do this because of the support of our members. DIA encourages Intermediary providers to consider joining DIA as a member, to ensure we can continue to support our members and the sector.
